Maybe you have heard about Ankylosing spondylitis because the famous singer, Jay Chou, has it. But what is Ankylosing spondylitis? Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is an inflammatory condition that can cause the spine to fuse over time. The fusion of the spine can make the back become stiff and less flexible. If the ribs are affected, it can cause difficulty breathing. The symptoms of AS typically begin in early adulthood, and it affects men more often than women.
Here are some features of AS:
1. Morning stiffness over 20-30 mins
2. Age < 40
3. Pain is improved by exercise, not by rest
4. Insidious onset
5. Awakening at 2nd half of the night because of pain
6. Alternating buttock pain
7. Chronic back pain more than 3 months
There is currently no cure for AS. However, medications and exercises can help lessen the symptoms and possibly slow the progression.
If you are currently experiencing the symptoms listed above, please consult a doctor and a therapist as soon as possible.
