Varicose veins are a common condition caused by weak or damaged vessel walls and valves. It can occur because of pregnancy, a tumor or being overweight or obese which can cause an increase in blood pressure inside the veins. Individuals who are older, sit or stand for long periods, or have an inactive lifestyle are more susceptible to developing varicose veins.
Veins are one-way valves that open and close to keep blood flowing towards the heart. When there are weakened or damaged valves or walls, this can cause blood to pool and flow backwards. As a result, veins grow larger and become distorted.
Some signs and symptoms of varicose veins include bulging, bluish veins; swelling; aching pain; or nighttime leg cramps. Depending on your symptoms, there are various options to relieve or prevent complications. These may include lifestyle changes, surgical procedures, medicine, or compression therapy. Some examples are mediating a healthy body weight to improve blood flow and ease pressure off from inside the veins, compression therapy that involves special stockings or bandages to alleviate pressure on legs and prevent swelling or being physically active, such as exercising or walking, to help with blood circulation.
